Saturday 24 October
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Motivated by research on quality practices, the early learning and child care sector has embraced engaging environments made up of open-ended materials and loose parts that invite exploration and collaboration among children. Inspired by relationship building and creating a sense of belonging, early learning practices invite physical contact, interactions and co-operative decision making by children. Re-opening early learning and child care facilities amidst COVID-19 has challenged these long-standing practices. This presentation will engage participants to critically rethink long standing practices within the context of COVID-19. They will be invited to reshape current strategies and approaches while retaining a focus on quality, relationship building and creating a sense of belonging for children and families.

Inspired by research and Ontario's pedagogy for early learning, the ECE sector has invested considerable time laying the framework for relationship-based practices. COVID-19 has threatened those practices.

This presentation will focus on reimagining relationship-building and creating a sense of belonging with children, families, and colleagues while sustaining and balancing COVID-19 concerns. Participants will be invited to examine how new COVID-19 child care guidelines impact relationships in the learning environment. Specifically, they will explore how the current pandemic climate influences stress, anxiety and brain development of young children, and steps involved to support children in managing that stress and anxiety.
