Supporting Self-Regulation through Positive Relationships: Belonging and autonomy in the developing child
Presenter: Gail Hunter, RECE and Raizell Slobodsky, RECE
Description: All children learn and grow with and through positive relationships. In this workshop we will explore current theories and practices that support children’s wellbeing through positive relationships, appropriate behaviour guidance and empowerment. This session will explore self-regulation, by delving into how children regulate their attention, behaviours, and emotions. We will look at the interconnectivity of the environment, child, family and the role of the educator. Strategies to empower families, strengthen the adult relationships, which support the child in developing a sense of belonging and autonomy will also be considered.

Description: Children and families join us from diverse cultures, with diverse abilities, languages, appearances, sizes, ages, classes, sexual orientations, and living circumstances. Yet, research suggests that our curriculum ignores many of these ways of identifying. Join us for this interactive, hands on learning opportunity with a balance of current research and practical recommendations. The aim of this discussion will be to promote a celebration of diversity and thus a sense of belonging for all children and families.

Description: Fathers play a key role in the healthy development of children and there is an increasing body of evidence to support the fact that men desire to be highly engaged in their children’s lives. However, there remain many barriers to applying this in our community-based work with families. These barriers include a lack of community partnerships, misunderstandings of the unique role men have as parents, and a lack of familiarity of best practices. The Father Factor will provide participants with an opportunity to understand the unique role men play in healthy child development. Through a collaborative process, you will assess your present practice with families and will leave with an action plan outlining practical things you can do to reach fathers in your community.

Description: Diversity, inclusion and equity continue to be of paramount relevance to the field of education particularly with recent emigration and immigration issues across the globe. How are educators using environments that are rich in diversity to help facilitate children’s cultural growth? Beyond flesh coloured crayons, pictures representing diversity and holiday celebrations, educators will benefit from critically reflecting on their own assumptions, cultural beliefs and values which influence their practice when working with culturally diverse children and families.

Description: How we as professionals interact with families during the initial screening and assessment stage can have a positive or negative impact on infants' and toddlers' developmental outcomes. Using a family centred model helps build strong relationships that are collaborative and allows families to stay engaged and be the navigator of their child’s journey. In this workshop we will provide an overview of the Red Flags of Early Development from birth to two years of age as well as a frame work for family centred intervention. We will look at how to walk alongside families through their journey, enabling families to be the consistent lead and acknowledge that they are the expert in the knowledge of their child’s development.

Description: By looking at empathy as both a cognitive and social skill we will build ways to encourage kindness in an insensitive world. This workshop examines techniques to support the natural kindness within every child. We will discuss ways to help children build on sympathy as they move towards sharing the emotional perspective of others. We will investigate practical strategies to help children focus on the feelings of their peers and ways to support human relationships. Like other skills empathy needs to be “taught” and this workshop will focus on ways to teach it in a developmentally appropriate manner. Empathy is essential to a functioning society. Our future depends on it.

Description: In this workshop, participants will learn about why trust and attachment is important for infants and toddlers. Many Early Childhood Educators would agree that supporting children so they can grow and learn is the primary goal in an active learning environment. Research points to the development of trust and attachment as a key factor in building confidence, resilience, and self-regulation. Together we will examine the different stages of attachment and adult behaviours that promote trusting relationships. Opportunities for creating policies that nurture attachment in infants and toddlers, such as continuity of care and schedules anchored by a primary caregiver will also be presented, after all “building trusting relationships, builds a stronger foundation for life!”

Join the 30th Annual Early Learning and Child Care Conference on Saturday May 5, 2018! This year our focus will be on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), and the powerful connection and potential they play in early learning experiences. As an educational approach that supports thoughtful risks, experiential learning, creative problem solving and collaboration, STEAM education is a perfect fit for today’s early learning environments. It allows us to build on our image of young children as innovators, leaders and learners of the 21st century by weaving science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics throughout our programs and guiding children’s inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
Conference includes panel presentation, expo, workshop and facilitated summary.
